I generally don’t complain about my age. I’m turning 53 in August, and I’m not scared of another birthday. I embrace them all. I feel pretty good most of the time. I eat a healthy diet, I sleep as much as I need to, I practice yoga, I meditate … And yet, since the onset of menopause a couple of years ago, once in a while I get hit with crushing fatigue.
It’s hard to accept that despite doing all the right things, I don’t always feel my best. I have a business to run, kids to take care of and well, a life to be lived. I’m sure I’m not the only midlife woman to feel this way.
In fact, chatting with friends and family, it turns out that most of us lose a bit of steam as we grow older. And because we are youthful and vibrant at heart, we doggedly want to overcome this!
I am on a quest to learn about the aging process and do what I can to stall it. After a lifetime of taking care of my body, mind and emotions, I know firsthand that there are things we can do to look and feel better no matter our age.
Well, new research has found that healthy mitochondria are key in aging with vitality. Mitochondria are vital because they give our cells and organs the energy they need to function properly.
How mitochondria impact healthy aging
Mitochondria are responsible for creating 90-95% of the energy in your cells and in the process produce 90-95% of the free radicals. For this reason mitochondria require very good antioxidant protection.
Our mitochondria reduce in function around 10% every decade. Yikes! This means our cells don’t get sufficient energy to power our organs at optimal levels as we grow older.
This lack of vital cellular energy results in fatigue. It can also show on our skin, with the onset of fine lines and wrinkles, lack of elasticity, dark spots and dull skin tone. Who doesn’t have some of that after a certain age?For a more detailed explanation, I invite you to download the e-book ‘Why mitochondria are so important to our health and how they influence the speed at which we age.’
New science targets mitochondria and promotes energy
For a month now, I’ve been using a product, MitoQ, which supports mitochondrial function and also reduces free radical damage in the cell. MitoQ (pronounced My-toe-Q) is a brand new type of antioxidant called a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant, that has potential to slow the aging process. This new supplement and skincare serum was developed in New Zealand at Otago University, Dunedin.
The result of using the supplement and the serum daily is that I’ve been able to get through the day without taking a nap! Of course I did my daily meditation, yoga and kept up my healthy diet. But to be able to make it through the day without feeling wiped out was a huge thing for me.
As for the serum, I’ve used it morning and night, and I like how my skin looks and feels. At my age, I don’t believe in miracles, but I welcome a product that will bring out the radiance in my mature complexion.
I was happy to learn that MitoQ Serum and MitoQ Supplements were selected once again as Product of the Year for 2015, by independent product review site ‘Truth In Aging.’
