As someone who always gets excited to interview remarkable individuals, I must admit that today’s guest takes my excitement to another level.
I’m thrilled to speak with Renee Landers, a woman whose story has captivated me online for years. Renee is a powerhouse of inspiration, resilience, and proof that it’s never too late to start something new.
At 72, she has accomplished what many would deem impossible. Let’s dive into her incredible journey.
A journey that redefines age
Renee Landers, based in Houston, Texas, has recently completed her 13th bodybuilding competition—this time in the UK. Her journey into competitive bodybuilding began at 69, following years of gentle nudges from her trainer to “just go for it.”
When she finally took the plunge, her only regret was not starting sooner. “It’s never too late to embrace a new challenge,” Renee says, a mantra she embodies in every way.
Her weightlifting journey began even earlier, at 60, as a recovery process following a lower lumbar fusion surgery.
“I was in debilitating pain before the surgery, but it was transformative,” she shares. That recovery evolved into a passion for fitness, and over time, it completely reshaped her life.
Parallels and personal reflections
Renee’s story resonated with me deeply. Both of us were runners in our younger years, inspired by fitness icons like Rachel McLish.
While Renee turned to weightlifting after her back surgery, I pivoted to yoga following a hip injury in my twenties.
Though I’ve dabbled in bodybuilding, it’s not on my bucket list due to my history of eating disorders. Still, I’ve explored other challenges, like mastering handstands in my fifties and becoming a certified yoga instructor at 56.
We’ve also both been single mothers and share a refusal to let aging become an excuse to stop challenging ourselves.
“It’s all about mindset,” Renee emphasizes. “I don’t think about getting old. I think about improving every year.”
Embracing hormone replacement therapy
Another fascinating aspect of Renee’s journey is her use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). She began HRT at 60 with estradiol and testosterone—a decision that, she believes, has significantly contributed to her vitality.
“So many women miss out because they’re afraid of HRT,” she explains. “You have to be your best advocate. If your doctor doesn’t support you, find one who does.”
When I asked why she doesn’t take progesterone, she said her doctor advised against it due to her age. “I’ve asked about it, but he believes it wouldn’t make a difference for me now. Still, I’m open to exploring other options,” Renee adds.
The joys of cruising and dancing
If you’ve followed Renee on Instagram, you know she loves cruising—an activity she pairs with her other passion: dancing.
“I’ve loved the ocean since my first cruise 25 years ago. It’s so calming,” she says.
Renee often travels with a group of dance friends, combining fitness, fun, and exploration. “I always work out on cruises,” she laughs.
“People think you gain weight on cruises, but you don’t have to. You can choose the right foods and stay active.”
Solo travel and fearless independence
Renee’s solo travels are another testament to her fearless spirit.
She recently traveled to the UK for a bodybuilding competition and then ventured solo to Sicily.
“I was scared, but I did it anyway. Courage is doing things despite fear,” she reflects. “By the time I returned, I felt so empowered.”
Navigating aging and relationships
Dating as an active, vibrant woman in her seventies presents unique challenges.
“Most men my age think old, act old, and feel old,” Renee says candidly. “I don’t want to be anyone’s caregiver. I’ll stay open to the idea of meeting someone, but I’m not going to settle. Life is too good to compromise.”
Her advice for others? “Take care of yourself. Stay fit so you can keep moving and enjoying life.”
Overcoming challenges and sharing strength
Renee’s openness about her struggles with anxiety and depression is equally inspiring. “I’ve been through it,” she says.
“But you can come out stronger on the other side. Therapy, self-care, and fitness have been my anchors.”
When I shared my own history with depression, Renee’s empathy shone through. “We’ve been in the depths of despair, but we’ve also risen above it. That strength is what makes us who we are.”
Advice for the next generation
Renee’s message is clear: “Don’t let age define you. Forget old speak—don’t think old, don’t talk old, and don’t surround yourself with negativity. Embrace every year as an opportunity to grow and thrive.”
