How I lead a happy heart-healthy lifestyle

This post is sponsored by Honey Nut Cheerios and all opinions are my own .

I consider myself fortunate to have been born into a family that enjoys exercise and is mindful of health. For as long as I can remember, I’ve turned to fitness, mindfulness and fun times with loved ones, to be as happy and healthy as possible.

Life will certainly throw us all curveballs, and I’ve been hit by a few, like losing it all in the Great Recession or, as a young woman, being diagnosed with clinical depression. Sticking to physical activities I enjoy has always helped me destress and bounce back from each and every setback.

From a young age, I would run with my dad – it was something that helped us both not only be fit, but also bond as we talked while running. My father also introduced me to yoga, which has weaved in and out of my life for decades. I recently became certified as a yoga instructor, such is the benefit I derive from meditating and practicing the physical postures.

I love to keep my bodywork interesting and fun so, a few months ago, I joined my kids for their boxing classes. Eventually I bought a heavy bag and hung it outdoors. Now I can also burn off steam and reduce stress by punching that bag for minutes on end. To me, exercise is not a chore, it’s a lifestyle that helps me cope with life’s hurdles, and also feel good about myself and the effort I put into staying fit and healthy.

I’m really excited that Honey Nut Cheerios is on a mission to inspire happy hearts, as this cereal has been a staple in my house since my kids were toddlers, and we still continue to enjoy it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, nearly 1 in 3 American adults have high cholesterol. And people with high cholesterol have about twice the risk of heart disease as people with lower levels.  Medical experts recommend maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in physical activities, and eating a heart-healthy diet that includes whole grain oats, like Honey Nut Cheerios.

How can you also live a happy, heart-healthy lifestyle? Find an activity you love, like dancing or walking the dog and grab a friend to enjoy it together. But simple things like playing with your nephews and nieces or your grandkids also counts. Indulging in activities that makes us feel better is key. Even hugging the dog counts. I do it daily!

I hope you will join the Honey Nut Cheerios Whole Heart Challenge on MyFitnessPal for the chance to win prizes and participate in fun challenges that will help your entire lifestyle.
